Canine Cellmates
Since 2013, Canine CellMates has pushed forward with its multifaceted mission of saving shelter dogs while simultaneously reducing recidivism by creating a safe and effective space for the rehabilitation of the incarcerated individuals that train them.
The organization's ten-week intensive course encompasses education, training, and holistic care for shelter dogs, offering a transformative experience for both the dogs and the inmates. Inmates take on the role of handlers, forming meaningful bonds with their assigned dogs. At the culmination of the training, the program's core aspiration is to see each dog successfully graduate and find a loving, permanent forever home, while simultaneously assisting men who have transformed through their involvement in the program to lead productive lives post-release.
It’s funny because I actually started volunteering as a photographer for CCM back in 2020 to cure my doggie fever…
I thought if I spent more time with the amazing fur babies in the program, that it would scratch that “I want a dog” itch. Kodi Reign, formerly known as Dancer, had other plans lol. Long story short, I knew from the moment I met her at her graduation ceremony that she would easily scratch that itch. What I wasn’t prepared for was how deeply she would paw her way into my heart.
And just like that…
My life became more vibrant.
